Cordelia

Daughter of Caine

Cordelia was the daughter of Caine. She was just entering into her father's world of seafaring with her first ship, The Maiden Swan. She was fiery and wild, sexy and impetuous.

Her story:

There was a *very* upright man, Lord Nathaniel, who belonged to one of the noble houses of Amber. He had two potential lovers, Cordelia of the House of Amber and Rosalind of a great House of Amber whose fortunes are steeped heavily in foreign trade.

Nathaniel went off to the war in Chaos - leaving behind the two female rivals. Each, of course, would have liked to be rid of her counterpart. Cordelia was assigned certain duties by Gerard; in the absence of Cordelia's full attention, Rosalind acted first.

Rosalind enlisted the aid of her other lover, Fabian, the younger son of a respected merchant house; together, the two forged documents whose appearance would ruin the fortunes of Rosalind's house. They paid an anonymous thief to place those documents in Cordelia's rooms and then leave the kingdom. The thief got in while Cordelia was out of town briefly on Crown business and had ample time to uncover secret hiding places and plant the documents there.

Rosalind then went to Gerard and told him that she suspected Cordelia of trying to ruin the fortunes of her House with forged documents. When confronted, Cordelia, unsuspecting, denied the charge and suggested a search of her rooms to clear her name. She didn't specifically tell Gerard the locations of her secret compartments, but he found them anyway and discovered the planted documents there. Not unsurprisingly, he was furious; he knew about the rivalry, and already suspected Cordelia of taking it too far. The fact that she was supposedly carrying out other duties at the same time only added to the anger.

His punishment was for Cordelia to be assigned to Rosalind's house as a trader under the direct control of Rosalind's father until such time as she recouped the funds that would have been lost because of the documents. Rosalind's father did not make this an easy task, but the amount was regained before the return of the forces who fought in Chaos. Lord Nathaniel, when he learned of the incident, chose Rosalind as his betrothed while refusing to listen to Cordelia's side of the story.

Cordelia still bears grudges against Rosalind for the deception, the rivalry, and because she got Lord Nathaniel in the end; Rosalind's father and his House for their unkind treatment of her during her punishment; Lord Nathaniel for refusing to listen and (in her opinion) overly swift turning to Rosalind as a potential bride; Lord Nathaniel's House, who she feels never particularly liked her in the first place and are rather pleased that he chose Rosalind instead; Gerard, who she feels should have allowed her more of a chance to disprove the charges against her and should have given her a less humiliating punishment; and lastly, any of Gerard's children, out of a desire to hurt Gerard through petty revenge.
